North Carolina and Team SECU Earn Top Honors at 2012 NYIB Conference

With Team State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) leading the charge, North Carolina earned top honors at this year’s National Youth Involvement Board (NYIB) Conference held early this month in New Orleans, LA. For the second consecutive year, North Carolina placed first in the Number of Students Reached through Youth Presentations teaching financial literacy to a total of 55,604 students. Team SECU also received two NYIB team awards --- the Highest Number of Students Reached by a Team (55,038) and the Highest Number of Presentations Conducted by a Team (855). NYIB was created in 1972, establishing a national system to distribute information regarding youth. This grassroots concept has evolved into a vehicle to help today’s youth become financially savvy individuals. The Annual NYIB Conference brings together credit union volunteers and professionals to share ideas on best practices and relevant youth financial education topics. For over a decade, the Credit Union has taught students of all ages about the importance of savings and responsible money management. SECU uses a variety of financial education programs to reach children and young adults, including SECU’s FAT CAT program for elementary-age students, the middle school Biz Kid$ curriculum, the National Endowment for Financial Education® High School Financial Planning Program (NEFE HSFPP), and SECU-created young adult presentations for college-age students. In addition, SECU’s relationship with local educators and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is critical in expanding its educational reach across the State. SECU Member Education Specialist Kelli Cheatham represented the Credit Union at the NYIB Conference and serves as North Carolina’s NYIB delegate. She comments, “SECU places great focus on financial education, training staff statewide to reach, teach, and engage youth through various programs offered in our local schools and communities. It is rewarding to help North Carolina’s students obtain the skills necessary to become financially successful adults, and we are thrilled to be honored for these efforts by NYIB.” NYIB Chairman, Rebecca Isaacs remarks, “This is the first year NYIB has awarded team reports. We are so proud and thankful for teams like SECU and want to congratulate them as exemplary members of NYIB.” About SECU SECU is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by its members.
