Managing finances can be quite a challenge and even more so if you don’t understand basic financial concepts. Many young North Carolinians don’t have the financial knowledge needed to make good money management choices and some of the most vulnerable are at-risk youth. State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) is proud to partner with local groups statewide to teach financial education concepts to young students. Recently, the Credit Union delivered its financial message to youth at Haven House Services in Wake County.
SECU’s Raleigh 801-Hillsborough Street branch staff assisted Haven House by offering to provide quarterly financial education workshops on topics such as budgeting, credit/credit reports and deposit services. Given at Haven House’s Outreach Center, the Preparation for Independent Living program, and the Wrenn House Crisis Intervention and Youth Shelter, the presentations serve youth ranging from 10-23 years old.
Haven House Outreach Coordinator, Kelsey D. Mosley states, “We are very pleased to have SECU provide financial education workshops to the youth in our programs. Many of these young people have limited education and very little financial experience. We hope the instruction provided through this partnership will help lead them to sustaining positive lives as they continue on their own.”
Ann Speck, Vice President of SECU’s Raleigh-801 Hillsborough Street branch comments, “Our branch is pleased to provide financial education assistance to individuals served through Haven House Services. Haven House provides incredible support to at-risk and disadvantaged youth and families and it is a privilege to help them in their mission through our financial workshops. SECU places a strong emphasis on financial literacy and feels it’s imperative this education begin very early. SECU is happy to assist Haven House in helping youth become successful adults.”
