The State Board of Education recognized GlaxoSmithKline as a "Friend of Education" at its September meeting. This is the Board's highest honor and is awarded to companies, organizations and individuals who demonstrate dedicated support of public schools. GlaxoSmithKline supports public schools in a variety of ways, and the company's partnership is critical for a number of education initiatives in North Carolina, including Communities in Schools, the Durham Public Education Network, the NC Business Committee for Education and a teacher mentor program coordinated by the NC Center for Teaching Quality. The mentor program links teachers certified by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards with teachers in schools and districts that have been identified as low performing or needing intervention. The NBPTS teachers provide mentoring services to teachers in these schools and districts through the Web. Bill Shore, director of US Community Partnerships for GlaxoSmithKline, accepted the Friend of Education award on behalf of the company.
