The kudos continue to roll in for Biogen Idec, which makes its multiple sclerosis drug Tysabri at its manufacturing plant in Research Triangle Park.
The Boston-based firm's RTP factory landed the Facility of the Year Award for Operational Excellence in the sixth annual awards program sponsored jointly by the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering, the group's associated trade show called INTERPHEX, and by Pharmaceutical Processing magazine.
The worldwide awards program recognizes state-of-the-art pharmaceutical manufacturing projects that use new and innovative technologies to enhance the delivery of a quality product, as well as reduce the cost of producing high-quality medicines.
"We're gratified to receive this prestigious award highlighting how engineering supports Biogen Idec's mission to serve patients and our growing product pipeline," said John Ward, the firm's vice president of global engineering.
"It reflects exceptional teamwork among partners who came together to tackle a major renovation under tight timelines to maintain the world-class status of our Research Triangle Park facility."
Last year Biogen was named "Company of the Year" by Pharmaceutical Executive magazine.
Biogen CEO James Mullen also told the 28th annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference in San Francisco that the number of patients using Tysabri grew 30 percent to about 48,800 last year, pushing sales to official blockbuster status, above $1 billion.
Biogen employs about 850 people in the Triangle.
